An insemination bench for turkey

27.03.2018

The insemination bench reduces the physical effort required to catch and inseminate turkey by limiting the need to hold them, without slowing down the pace of insemination.

The insemination bench distributed by IMV Technologies was designed to meet the needs of Hendrix Genetics Turkeys, which was looking to improve wellbeing for employees and birds alike. The insemination bench developed reduces the physical effort required to catch and inseminate turkey by limiting the need to hold them, without slowing down the pace of insemination. To prevent the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders, an ergonomist was involved in developing the project. Several components of the bench are height-adjustable (insemination table, chair, straw distributor, etc.) enabling it to be adapted to the operator.

The frame is made of stainless steel, and a handle and wheels have been added to make it mobile. The insemination bench comprises:

– a table on which the operator positions the bird,
– a device comprising foam-covered clamps and flexible rollers for restraining the bird’s legs,
– a standing chair for the inseminator,
– an arm rest for the inseminator,
– a straw distributor support.

Two operators positioned on either side of the preparation table alternately catch the turkey, place them on the table and slide them into the restraining device. The process was designed to avoid stress for the birds during handling operations. The turkey is held on her back, facing the inseminator. Following insemination she is released.
